What does fragrance mean to us, and to you? Different scents can stir up memories of emotions. Loved ones, past and present, friends, occasions, places, they can all be so evocative. Candles especially have a true sense of calm. I know that whenever I am working at my desk, I always light a candle.
Inspired by our recent Creed experience, we thought it would be perfect timing to bring you our first scented candle edit, featuring entirely British brands. We have picked our seven favourites.
Some you may know, some you may not, but trust us, we love them all. We have have all of these candles ourselves, so it’s no word of a lie when we say, buy one for your mum, your best friend and, most importantly, buy for yourself.
Scent it with luxury : Perfumer H
Beautiful candles created by the nose of the wonderfully talented Lyn Harris. Candles inspired by seasonal scents, the new collection is being unveiled this week. Sweet peas, dandelion, orange blossom – these are inspired by the English seasons. Hand-blown glass and well worth splashing out on. Our favourite is Orange Blossom. Details of all their collection on their instagram page
Scent it for fun : Anya Hindmarch
Sassy, humorous, cheeky candles which smell divine from her collaboration with Lyn Harris of Perfumer H above. Our favourite scent is Washing Powder.
Scent it with England : Philippa Craddock
The amazing florist for Harry and Meghan’s wedding takes great pride in her new range of exquisitely-scented 100 % natural two wick candles. They take you on a journey through English hedgerows, potting sheds and more. If you are looking on value for money, they are actually bigger than Diptique. A huge selling point for us.
Scent it historically : Creed
We love this very special, historic brand. Go with your mum for a private scent consultation – feel as special as Audrey Hepburn. We were sent Irish Tweed and it is burns regularly for a clean fresh smell.
Scent it personalised : Jo Loves
Jo Loves has beautiful candles, her talent for scent knows no bounds in her little Elizabeth St store. A gift idea for Mother’s Day is to have it personalised onto the label. Jo’s biography is an inspirational read too. Pomelo is our summer go-to.
Scent it organic : Self-Care Candles
So stunningly fragrant, these vegan and eco-friendly candles can even be re-filled when they are finished. Self-Care have just released a collaboration with Deliciously Ella, and we know that Ella knows a thing or two! Our favourite here is May Chang & Rosemary. Perfect for the kitchen.
Scent with style : Jane Birkin for Miller Harris
Miller Harris landed a coup when they collaborated with English sixties icon Jane Birkin. If you can’t afford the perfume, then this candle is your answer to her boho French chic style with L’Air de Rien.
Some of these have affiliate links, most do not. They are featured here because we genuinely love the candle. The only gifted candle is the Phillippa Craddock one, and that is because it has literally just launched in Selfridges and on her website.
